LCWU hosts 1st Virtual Conference on Gender and Social Sciences
Speakers at the 1st International virtual conference attached great importance to conducting research in different disciplines of social sciences while keeping gender perspectives in consideration.
The Department of Gender & Development Studies, Lahore College for Women University, and Forman Christian College (A Chartered University) hosted the 1st International virtual conference on "Gender and Social Sciences: Diversity, Challenges, and Opportunities" under the US-Pakistan University Partnership Grant Program (UPGP) funded by US Mission to Pakistan and administered by United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP).
The main objective of this conference was to understand and unfold the theme of gender across different disciplines of social sciences and promote the theme of gender in research of other social science disciplines.
On this occasion, Vice-Chancellor Lahore College for Women University, Prof Dr. Bushra Mirza said that this conference was a big opportunity for scholars of social sciences to find new directions in their future research by using a gender lens.
While mentioning the commitment of Pakistan with Sustainable Development Goals, she reiterated that without understanding the gender perspective, striving for achieving SDGs might become difficult. She said we all should join hands in the journey of achieving gender equality and women empowerment.
Dr. Aneeq Ahmed professor and Chair, Dept. Of Psychology, Handerson State University USA shared the historical perspective of researching gender differences in the discipline of psychology. Whereas, Dr. Maria Fannin, Professor of Geography, Bristol University, presented her paper on "Giving Birth to Hostile Environment".
Dean of Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Muhammad Afzal appreciated the efforts of the Department of Gender and Department Studies on the successful execution of this first virtual conference.
Dr. Sikandar Hayat Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences at Forman Christian College highlighted the importance of social sciences and research to understand the gender dynamics in the society of Pakistan.
Dr. Jonathan Addleton, Rector Forman Christian College (A Chartered University), and Dr. Douglas Trimble. Vice-Rector FCCU laid great stress on scholars of social sciences to add gender perspective in their research to highlight the gaps.
Kathleen Gibilisco chief of the Political/Economic Section at US Consulate general Lahore highlighted the need of introducing the discipline of gender studies as a compulsory subject in natural, social, management, and applied science.
Dr. Uzma Ashiq, in charge of Gender and Development Studies, LCWU expressed her gratitude to all administration of Lahore College for Women University, Forman Christian College, and the US consulate for their support and collaboration in organizing this first virtual conference.
In this conference various national and international social sciences researchers, scholars and academicians presented their papers.
